Introduction

Renewable sources of energy offer sustainable alternatives to our dependency on fossil fuels, a means of reducing harmful greenhouse emissions and opportunities to reduce our reliance on imported fuels. For these reasons, Irish and European policy supports the increased use of renewable energy.

Renewable energy from sources such as the wind, the sun, wood, waste and water are abundantly available in Ireland. Several renewable energy technologies are now commercially viable and capable of supplying clean, economical heat and power.

The Renewable Energy Information Office is pleased to make available the following comprehensive information packs in downloadable format.

E-Update Summaries

Summary updates of the news, weblinks and publications featured throughout the E-Updates issued in 2001 are now available in two handy download documents.

Development Plans and Renewable Energy

This paper now available to download discusses the context for including a section on renewable energy in Local Authority Development Plans. It may be seen as a supporting document for the “Suggestions on the Inclusion of Renewable Energy into Development Plans”, which are included in the introduction.

Renewable Energy Information Office

The Renewable Energy Information Office (REIO) is a national service of Sustainable Energy Ireland, established to promote the use of renewable energy resources and provide independent advice and information on financial, social and technical issues relating to renewable energy development.

REIO seeks to reduce the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas, peat) which release harmful greenhouse gases, by facilitating the increased use of energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and hydropower.

In order to achieve its objectives, REIO:

  • operates a helpdesk, informed by a comprehensive library of relevant materials and publications
  • publishes a regular newsletter, Energy Update
  • publishes a range of information brochures
  • compiles contact lists of suppliers, consultants and developers operating in the renewable energy field
  • maintains a database of relevant parties in Ireland who have a key role to play in the further growth of the renewable energy industry
  • organises conferences, workshops and information meetings on various relevant issues
  • provides a priority advice service for local authority planners and decision makers
  • chairs and facilitates working groups to address problems and remove obstacles to renewable energy development
  • assumes a transnational role through the exchange of information with organisations abroad and co-operation with and participation in international activities
